Nail Art Pens
Nail art pens let you draw on your nails much as you would on paper, without the brush control that freehand painting takes. This page collects the Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in a wide range of colors, from Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen Black and Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen White to brights like Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen Neon Pink.

How to use a nail art pen
- Start with a fully dry base color. Drawing on tacky polish drags it and clogs the tip.
- Shake the pen well and start the polish flowing by pressing the tip on a scrap of paper or foil, following the directions on the pen.
- Hold the pen at a low angle and draw with light, steady pressure. Resting the pinky of your drawing hand on the table keeps lines straighter.
- Wipe the tip on a tissue every few strokes so dried polish doesn't build up.
- Let the design dry fully, then seal it with top coat.
What you can draw
Black and white pens do most of the work: outlines, stripes, lettering, faces and the small details on character designs. Brighter colors handle hearts, flowers, zigzags and chevrons. A pen also makes a neat French tip if you trace the smile line first and then fill it in. For perfectly round dots, a dotting tool is easier, and for long, straight lines, try striping tape.
Keeping pen designs from smearing
Most smearing happens at the top coat step. Wait until the art is completely dry, load the top coat brush generously, and float it over the nail so the bristles never press into the design. A quick-dry top coat shortens the wait between steps.
Questions people ask
Can you use a nail art pen on gel polish?
You can draw on cured gel nails once the sticky layer is wiped away, then seal the art with a regular top coat. Regular pen polish isn't made to sit under a gel top coat, so if you want the art sealed in gel, use gel liner polishes that cure under the lamp instead.
Why won't my nail art pen flow?
The tip has probably dried. Shake the pen again, press the tip on paper to restart the flow, and clean the tip with a little polish remover. Capping the pen right after each use keeps it from drying out.
Should you use a nail art pen or a striping brush?
Pens are easier for beginners and for writing. A long striping brush makes thinner, longer lines once you've practiced. Many people keep both alongside the rest of their nail art supplies.
