Dip powder nails
Dip powder gets its color from a powder instead of a polish. The nail is brushed with a glue-like liquid, dipped in or sprinkled with colored acrylic powder, and set with an activator; the steps are repeated a couple of times.
Is dip just acrylic?
Close to it. Celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik told Who What Wear that dip is “just colored acrylic powder.” It adds no length, and it needs no lamp to set, although some systems seal with UV.
How long dip powder lasts
Up to four weeks, say both the American Academy of Dermatology and Cleveland Clinic.
How to remove dip nails
It takes 100% acetone on the nails, and the AAD points out that this can damage them.
Before you book
- Hygiene: dipping fingers into a jar other customers used can spread infection or warts, the AAD warns. Ask the tech to pour powder into a throw-away cup or sprinkle it on.
- Allergy: the adhesives are the main culprit. A reaction can show hours to days later, so the AAD suggests testing one nail and waiting seven days.
- Prep: the heavy buffing that helps it stick may weaken your nails over time, Cleveland Clinic says.
- Ingredients: Cleveland Clinic lists methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate and toluene as possible irritants in dips.
Is dip healthier than gel?
Cleveland Clinic’s answer is “yes and no.” Dip skips the UV lamp, but it brings the hygiene, filing and ingredient downsides above. One AAD dermatologist does recommend it for some patients who bite or pick their nails, because they can’t bite or pick it off.
SNS and home kits
SNS, a dip brand, calls itself the original nail-health system, odor-free with no UV lamp (its own claim), and now sells gel polish and builder gel too. Who What Wear says dip is easier to do at home than acrylic, and Olive & June, Nailboo and Modelones sell home dip kits.
Try a color on a drawn hand, then find a nail salon near you, and ask them to pour the powder into a fresh cup.
