Builder gel nails (BIAB)

Builder gel is a thicker gel, brushed on from a bottle, that gives your own nail a smooth, slightly plump shape and extra strength. Salons call it builder gel, BIAB or a structured gel manicure.

One thing, several names

Refinery29 says some salons call the service builder gel or BIAB, others call it structured gel, and CND calls its version Plexigel. Who What Wear uses structured gel as the umbrella term for bottled brush-on gels, and calls BIAB soft and Plexigel hard.

BIAB itself is a trademark of The GelBottle Inc, which says that if it isn’t TGB, it isn’t BIAB. That is the company’s own claim; it sells Original, Fibre, Hard and TPO- and HEMA-free versions.

How builder gel goes on

A primer and a cured base come first. The thicker gel is then built into an apex, the high point that gives the nail its strength. Between sets it can be filled at the cuticle, an infill, instead of starting over.

How long builder gel lasts

Who What Wear’s BIAB guide says two to four weeks; Refinery29 says about three weeks on average.

Taking it off

This is where the sources split, and the answer depends on the product. A GelBottle artist told Who What Wear that BIAB can be soaked off, often after much of it is filed away first. Refinery29 describes structured gel as a thick or hard gel that needs professional removal, and warns that poor removal at home can cause damage. Who What Wear’s BIAB expert says there is no safe way to remove BIAB at home.

Who it suits

The experts these magazines quote say it suits weak or brittle nails and people trying to grow out their own. That is their opinion, not a promise. Builder gel is cured under a lamp, so the UV lamp debate applies to it as well.

Names you will hear next to it

  • Rubber base: a flexible base gel that shows up beside structured manicures online. We found no clear definition from a source we trust, so ask your nail tech what they mean by it.
  • Japanese gel: a soft gel from Japan said to offer the strength of a hard gel while still soaking off, lasting at least three weeks.
  • Russian manicure: a technique, not a product. Cuticles are removed with an e-file and scissors, and the gel is laid very close to the skin. The AAD and Cleveland Clinic advise against cutting or pushing cuticles, because that invites infection.

What it costs

Refinery29 put a New York City builder gel set at around $100 all in, in May 2025. That is one city in one year; we have not checked prices anywhere else.

Kits for home

Home builder gels are sold too, among them Olive & June’s Builder Gel System, Beetles Builder Gel and Kiara Sky’s Gel Builder in a Bottle. The removal warnings above still apply.
